MMS6220 | EPRO Dual Channel Shaft Eccentricity Monitor MMS6000 TSI Module

Overview
The MMS6220 is a hot-swappable single-slot rack module within the EPRO (Vibro-Meter / Emerson) MMS6000 Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation (TSI) machinery protection system. It is a dedicated module for rotor shaft eccentricity measurement, receiving signals from EPRO PR642X series eddy current proximity probes paired with CON preamplifiers.
This dual-channel module calculates shaft eccentricity, peak-to-peak radial gap, minimum and maximum shaft centerline position. It is mainly used during turbine startup and coast-down to detect rotor bow, preventing rubbing damage caused by bent rotors before the machine reaches operating speed. It complies with API 670 standard for turbomachinery supervision.
MMS6220 supports hot-swap replacement and redundant 24VDC power supply, allowing online maintenance without shutting down the entire MMS6000 rack. Original manufacturing is discontinued (EOL). We supply fully tested surplus and refurbished MMS6220 spare modules for drop-in replacement for steam turbines, gas turbines and centrifugal compressor TSI racks in power generation, oil & gas and heavy industrial sites.
Core Features
Dual independent eddy current input channels: Two galvanically isolated proximity probe inputs for shaft eccentricity and rotor bow monitoring
Multiple measurement modes: Peak-to-peak gap, minimum / maximum shaft position and eccentricity calculation for rotor bow detection
API 670 compliant: Designed to meet API 670 turbomachinery supervision and safety monitoring requirements
Hot-swap capability: Module can be removed and replaced online without powering down the MMS6000 rack
Redundant DC power input: Dual 24VDC power supply inputs eliminate single-point power failure risk for critical monitoring loops
Full sensor & hardware self-diagnostics: Continuous monitoring for cable break, short circuit, signal out-of-range and internal module faults
Built-in probe linearization: Compensates non-linear characteristics of eddy current probes to guarantee high measurement precision
Run-up / coast-down data storage: Automatically records eccentricity trend data during machine startup and shutdown for rotor bow analysis
Dual serial communication: Front-panel RS232 for local parameter setup; rear RS485 bus for connection to MMS6850 diagnostic system and plant SCADA/DCS
Isolated analog output: 0–10VDC analog signal for transmitting real-time eccentricity readings to control systems
Dual-level relay alarms: Independent Alert and Danger SPDT dry-contact relay outputs for rotor bow protection interlock
Password protected configuration: Multi-level access lock prevents unauthorized modification of alarm setpoints
Working Principle
The MMS6220 receives gap voltage signals from two eddy current probes installed on the same shaft cross-section. Eddy current probes convert the physical gap between probe tip and rotor surface into proportional analog voltage signals.
The module linearizes raw probe signals and computes shaft eccentricity, which reflects the static bow of the rotor. During turbine startup, rotor bow can cause rotor-to-stator rubbing. MMS6220 tracks the min and max radial gap as the rotor turns, calculating eccentricity values. Users configure Alert and Danger thresholds. If rotor bow exceeds preset safety limits, relay outputs trigger alarms or machine protection interlock.
Built-in diagnostic logic continuously checks sensor cable integrity, probe gap window and module hardware health. Fault conditions are indicated via front-panel LEDs and transmitted over RS485 bus to plant DCS or MMS6850 diagnostic software. It stores eccentricity trend data during run-up and coast-down for post-event rotor bow analysis.
Application Fields

FAQ
Q1: What sensors are compatible with MMS6220?
A: It works with EPRO PR642X series eddy current probes together with CON series preamplifiers.
Q2: What is the difference between MMS6220 and MMS6210?
A: MMS6210 measures axial thrust and radial shaft displacement; MMS6220 is dedicated to shaft eccentricity / rotor bow measurement, mainly used for turbine startup supervision.
Q3: Does MMS6220 support hot swap?
A: Yes, hot-swap is supported inside MMS6000 rack; you can replace the module without powering down the monitoring rack.
Q4: What is the main purpose of measuring shaft eccentricity?
A: To detect rotor bow before turbine accelerates to full speed and avoid severe rotor-stator rubbing damage.
