Universal Relay (UR) – Overview

The Universal Relay (UR) family is a suite of advanced protection and control devices built on a common modular platform. UR products are designed to safeguard critical assets and streamline power system management, whether deployed as stand-alone relays or integrated into a broader power automation system.

Each UR relay combines:

• High-performance protection algorithms for maximum security and uptime

• Expandable I/O options for application flexibility

• Integrated monitoring and metering functions

• High-speed communications for modern automation environments

• Comprehensive programming and configuration capabilities

Management and configuration are handled through EnerVista Launchpad, a powerful software tool supplied with every UR relay. EnerVista Launchpad not only enables programming of setpoints but also provides:

• Centralized management of setpoint files

• Automatic access to the latest firmware and documentation

• A window into the substation automation system for streamlined operations

Configurations and Hardware

The UR can be supplied in different form factors:

• 19-inch rack horizontal mount unit

• ¾-size vertical mount unit

It is built from modular components that can be specified at the time of ordering, including:

• Power supply

• CPU

• CT/VT input

• Digital input/output

• Transducer input/output

• Inter-relay communications

• Communication switch

• IEC 61850 Process Bus interface

Protection and Control

The UR integrates one of the industry’s most comprehensive protection algorithm suites, ensuring reliable fault detection and system uptime. A UR Selector Guide (provided separately) details the protection elements available for each relay model.

To support its protection and control functions, the UR offers a wide range of I/O options (capabilities vary by model):

• CTs and VTs – Up to 24 analog current transformer (CT) and voltage transformer (VT) inputs for AC power line monitoring. Supports both 1 A and 5 A CTs.

• Specialized CT modules – Options include:

  • A CT module with sensitive ground input for ground fault protection on high-impedance grounded systems.

  • A high-impedance fault detection module for fast, reliable detection of faults caused by downed conductors.
