Functional Overview

The Rack Interface Module (RIM) serves as the primary interface between the Bently Nevada 3500 rack and external systems. It manages communication, configuration, and information exchange functions for the entire rack, ensuring seamless system integration and monitoring connectivity.

The RIM must be installed in slot 1, directly adjacent to the power supply modules. Each rack requires one RIM for proper operation.

Communication and Compatibility

Supports the Bently Nevada proprietary communication protocol for rack configuration and machinery information retrieval.

Compatible with external communication processors such as TDXnet, TDIX, and DDIX.

Enables both local and remote configuration of the rack and connected monitoring modules.

Although the RIM manages communication and configuration functions common to the rack, it is not part of the critical monitoring path. Therefore, it does not affect the normal protective operation of the overall monitoring system.

Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) Version

For TMR applications, a specialized TMR version of the RIM is required.
In addition to all standard RIM functions, the TMR RIM performs continuous “monitor channel comparison.”

The TMR configuration uses a monitor voting mechanism, based on parameters defined in the monitor setup.

The RIM continuously compares outputs from three redundant monitors.

If the data from one monitor deviates beyond the configured tolerance compared to the other two, the RIM:

Flags the monitor as faulty, and

Logs an event in the System Event List, ensuring rapid fault identification and enhanced system reliability.
